Born of Soil

Born of Soil
Echo Records Series

Born of Soil is a graphic design project that tells South Africa’s story through three fictional album covers and accompanying newspaper inserts. Each album represents a different chapter in the nation’s journey—apartheid resistance, the transition to democracy, and contemporary reflections on identity, culture, and politics [1948–2024].

The project combines analog and digital processes—collage, risograph printing, found ephemera, and typography—to create layered, archival-inspired designs. Music serves as both mirror and memory, with each album pairing songs to key historical events through annotated timelines. The newspaper inserts expand this connection, weaving together history, culture, and sound to invite critical reflection on how the past continues to shape the present.

Designed under the fictional record label Echo Records, the series uses visual storytelling to explore themes of resilience, transformation, and the enduring connection to land and identity in South Africa.
